Ever wanted a rub-on in a particular size, font or colour and couldn’t find what you were looking for? Why not make your own!! You can also use this method for pictures, photos, clip art, and any thing else that can be printed !! Here are a couple of examples below to whet you appetite….

You will need an inkjet printer, a transparency that is suitable for inkjet printers, a popsicle stick and some tissues.

1. Insert transparency into your printer. You MUST print on the SHINY side of the transparency. Normally, you would print on the rough side so that the ink would dry, but we do not want that to happen for this project.

2. Select your printer to print a transparency and select BEST quality so that you achieve a maximum amount of ink on your transparency.

3. If you are printing words don’t forget to flip the writing

4. After printing, take care holding the transparency and carefully place it onto your paper without smudging.

5. Rub vigorously with a popsicle stick to transfer the ink to your paper. Take care not to move the transparency while doing this

6. When finished, carefully lift the transparency off the paper.

7. There will be some ink left on the transparency, but you can just wipe this off with a tissue and you have a fresh transparency to do some more. The transparency can be used over and over again so this is a very cost effective method to making your own rub ons.

Q: Are printer ink and toner acid free? Are they safe to use in my scrapbooks?

A: Most ink is acid free.

Ink issues to be concerned about include: how long will the ink last (longevity)?
Is it water resistant?
Is it fade resistant?
If you don't have the answers to these questions about your printer, please contact the manufacturer for more information about their ink.
If the ink for your printer won't last very long, contact the manufacturer and let them know you are aware of archival issues and are concerned about the longevity of their product.
Printers that have a powder toner and are heat set (laser jets, lasers, copy machines) are permanent inks and are safe to use.
